Illness Policy

When to Keep Your Child Home

To protect all children and staff, please keep your child home if they have any of the following symptoms:

  • Fever: 100?F (38?C) or higher - must be fever-free for 24 hours without medication before returning
  • Vomiting or Diarrhea: Must be symptom-free for 24 hours before returning
  • Rash: Any unexplained rash (unless cleared by a doctor)
  • Contagious Illness: Pink eye, strep throat, chickenpox, etc. - must have doctor's clearance to return
  • Severe Cough or Difficulty Breathing: May indicate respiratory illness
  • Lethargy: Unusual tiredness or inability to participate in activities

Important: Children must be symptom-free for 24 hours (without medication) before returning to daycare.

Reporting Illness

Please notify us immediately if your child:

  • Will be absent due to illness
  • Has been diagnosed with a contagious illness
  • Has been exposed to a contagious illness

We will notify families if there is an outbreak of a contagious illness in the daycare.

Medication Policy

We can administer medication with proper authorization. All medication must meet the following requirements:

  • Be in the original container with pharmacy label
  • Have a completed medication authorization form (available in office or parent portal)
  • Be given directly to staff (never left in child's bag)
  • Include clear instructions (dosage, time, duration)

Prescription Medication: Requires written authorization from parent and doctor.

Over-the-Counter Medication: Requires written authorization from parent only.

Allergies & Dietary Restrictions

We take allergies and dietary restrictions seriously. Please inform us of any allergies or dietary needs during enrollment and keep this information updated.

Our Practices:

  • All staff are trained in allergy management
  • Allergy information is posted in classrooms and kitchen
  • We maintain a nut-free environment
  • Meals are prepared to accommodate dietary restrictions
  • Emergency action plans are in place for severe allergies

If your child has a severe allergy, please provide an EpiPen and ensure staff are trained in its use.

We have comprehensive emergency procedures for:

  • Fire evacuation
  • Severe weather
  • Lockdown situations
  • Medical emergencies

Regular Drills

We practice emergency drills regularly:

  • Monthly fire drills
  • Quarterly lockdown drills
  • Severe weather drills as needed
  • All drills are age-appropriate

Health & Hygiene Practices

We maintain strict hygiene practices to prevent the spread of illness:

Hand Hygiene

  • Frequent handwashing
  • Hand sanitizer stations
  • Teaching proper technique

Cleaning & Sanitizing

  • Daily deep cleaning
  • Sanitizing of surfaces
  • Toys cleaned regularly

Food Safety

  • Safe food handling
  • Proper storage
  • Temperature monitoring

Diapering

  • Dedicated changing areas
  • Proper disposal
  • Handwashing after each change

Immunizations

We require up-to-date immunization records for all children, as required by Ontario law. Please ensure your child's immunization records are current and submitted to us.

Required Immunizations: Children must be immunized according to Ontario's immunization schedule, unless they have a valid exemption.

First Aid & Medical Care

All staff members are certified in First Aid and CPR, and we maintain first aid supplies throughout the facility.

In Case of Injury:

  • Minor injuries are treated on-site and documented
  • Parents are notified immediately of any injury
  • Incident reports are completed and shared with parents
  • For serious injuries, we call 911 and parents immediately

We have established relationships with local medical facilities for emergency situations.

Health Updates

We follow all current public health guidelines and recommendations. Our health and safety practices are regularly reviewed and updated based on guidance from:

  • Ontario Ministry of Health
  • Public Health Ontario
  • Local Public Health Unit
  • Ministry of Education
